COMPREHENSIVE DIABETIC FOOT CARE

By the nature of the course of the diabetic disease process, patients afflicted with the disorder are prone to not only vascular and nerve complications in the feet, but also skin conditions, skin breakdown and infections.  Our clinics strive to treat diabetic patients proactively to prevent serious complications by evaluating each patient individually and developing a treatment plan designed for each individual.  These treatments may include regular evaluation and nail and skin debridements, preventive surgical intervention, infection control, wound debridements and outside referrals to other specialists, if warranted.

ANODYNE THERAPY AND PAIN TREATMENT

Anodyne Therapy is an FDA approved treatment that is utilized to treat numerous different conditions, however, most commonly it is implemented to treat patients with diabetic neuropathy, unspecified neuropathy, radiculopathy, vascular impairment, post operatively and for sports related injuries.

Anodyne is an infrared light delivery to the surface of the skin.  It is a non-invasive, painless process that generally gives the patient a feeling of comfort and warmth in their legs and feet.  The infrared light releases Nitric Oxide into the bloodstream, which is needed for nerve conduction and also helps with circulation and tissue healing.

Each treatment lasts from 15 to 45 minutes and improvement can often be seen after 1 or 2 treatments, and a majority of our patients have reported good or excellent improvement over the course of therapy.

We are one of the few clinics in the Central Mississippi area that offers Anodyne Therapy!

NAIL CONDITIONS

Our practice evaluates and treats all types of nail conditions ranging from mild fungal toenails to surgical correction and removal of the nail.  Nail conditions may include fungal nails, black nails, white nails, Dystrophic nails, ingrown nails and blood under the nail resulting from injury or athletic activity.

After examining the toe or nail condition, the Podiatrist will inform you of your treatment options and give a recommendation as to the best treatment plan.  Treatments may include antibiotics, nail removal, topical or oral antifungals or permanent nail removal.  Each individual is assessed according to their personal medical history and conditions, objective for the treatment and long-term outcomes.

SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS

Though our goal is always to evaluate, treat and alleviate your foot condition in a comprehensive conservative treatment plan, that is not always the case and surgical intervention may be needed to correct the deformity or the problem. Some of the simpler surgical corrections can be performed in the office with light sedation and numbing of the localized area.  More involved and advanced surgical procedures will have to be scheduled at one of our local hospitals or surgical centers

Most commonly, conditions that may require surgical intervention are bunions, hammertoes, callouses, spurs and heel pain, trauma or fractures, and complications from diabetes.  If surgery is deemed a necessity, it is generally performed in an outpatient or same-day-surgery setting where the patient procedure is performed and discharged to home the same day.  Very few foot procedures require an overnight stay in the hospital.

INJECTION THERAPY

At times it may be necessary for localized or regional injections.  These may be done at the area of the pain, into a joint or placed intramuscularly. Injections may include local anesthetic, steroid or anti-inflammatory agents to treat and help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with the conditon(s). Injections may be given therapuetically or as a means of diagnosis and might also be given pre-operatively, intra-operatively or post-op.

FOOT INJURIES

Foot injuries are common and are most commonly seen among athletes or from athletic activities.  Injuries can be classified as acute, sub-acute or chronic in nature.  Most injuries can be evaluated and treated in the office, atleast initially.  Evaluation and treatment may include any of the following:  Plain film x-ray, splinting or wrapping, casting or walking boot, flexible casting, CT or MRI scans, physical therapy and surgery.

Most commonly we see ankle and achilles injuries, tendon and ligament tears(partial or complete), digit and foot fractures, stress fractures, ankle sprains, turf toe and running and overuse syndrome injuries.

A majority of the time surgical intervention is not required, but may be necessary if the injury is severe enough or becomes chronic in nature.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

There are many foot and ankle conditions that can benefit tremendously with a comprehensive physical therapy regimen.  Certainly not all conditions or treatment plans will require therapy, but, if necessary, we are proponents of therapy options to promote the best possible treatment outcomes.

At some point during your treatment, it may be necessary to implement some of the following physical therapy treatments:

- Ultrasound, Phonophoresis, Iontophoresis, electrical stimulation or stretching

- Manual therapy, which uses the massage and manipulation of the body's soft tissues to relieve pain and promote healing

- Preparing the body before surgery and rehabilitation after surgery

- General strength & balance training

- Rehabilitation after a bone fracture

- Outpatient prosthetic rehabilitation, to help individuals adjust to an artificial limb or other external appliance

- fascia and trigger point releases

- Rehabilitation after a sports injury

- Comprehensive foot and ankle therapy for arthritis and arthritis related conditions

AND REMEMBER...

The patient always comes first and is treated with their best interests in mind, and according to what their wants and objectives dictate.
